A SaaS product

A couple of weeks back I was tasked with designing a SaaS product for the tech industry. Now here’s the challenge: It had to be done in a week. If you are familiar with GV’s Design Sprint then you understand this is actually possible. I found this a great opportunity to document a step-by-step guide to designing an app in just 6 days. In this article, I will break down my process and the design phases for each day.

Problem 📱

Due to the pandemic, everything went online.
But this created problem for the management people who have restaurants, hospitals, malls to handle.

  • Internally communication
  • Contactless communication (apart from call and messages)
  • Assigning task
  • Checking the progress of the emoplyee

Solution 🌟

It became really necessary to make everything contactless and safe during the pandemic. Keeping that in mind the “Cheqq” was launched.
In this App, one can

  • Create Cheqqlists
  • Assign work to employees
  • Check the status of the work

Assign daily To-Do to employees

  • Keep track of sensors and much more
  • Track the safety of your entire business across multiple locations.

Challenge 🎯

The prototype of the App was needed for customer prospect. Which is really necessary before investing so much money and time in the development phase.
I had only 6 days to do it.
A prototype of both(admin and user) views was needed. I designed approximately 170 screens for the prototype for the proper demo.

Day 1: Learn

Research Methods

The research phase tends to take up some time so any existing information I have at hand is a great way to save time. Marketing material, competitors, user surveys, or if it’s an existing app reading user reviews in the app store so I start getting in that user mindset early on.

Market Research 📊

Pandemic created a communication gap distance between employees and admin.
A product was required to fill the gap between employees and admin. Without any contact.

How Might We (Brainstorming)

How Might We Question

How might we assign them the task?

How might we give them a to-do list?

How might we check the status work?

User Personas 🙍🏻‍♂️🙎🏻‍♀️

The results from the user survey provided sufficient information to create user personas. I opted for creating age and gender agnostic personas to focus on achieving user goals equally regardless of age and gender.

Approach

My approach is to design an app that will connect management and their staff which will be used in Hospitality, Medical, Health & Wellness, Retail Sector.
It’ll have two views.

  1. Admin View (Management)- They can make a list of tasks and can assign them to users. Can also keep track of the status after assigning work.
  2. User View (Employee)- They can see the list of tasks assigned to them and can update the status of work.

Day 2: Wireframe

This is my favorite step. As soon as I get the whole picture of the thing after talking to stakeholders I try to put them on paper.

They are the most essential part, I always like to start with Low-Fidelity wireframe so I can take the feedback from stakeholders and tweak my wireframe here and there before jumping into the design phase. (It’s always convenient to make changes on the wireframe and to make sure you’re on right track)

Low-Fidelity wireframe.

Day 3: Design

Logotype

I wanted a significant logo. I thought of a Writing pad and I thought of a tick mark as a logo and soon after some iterations, I came up with combining a Checkmark and a writing pad.

Color Scheme

I went for a blue color scheme. Blue represents the meaning of depth, trust, loyalty, sincerity, wisdom, confidence, stability, faith, and intelligence.

Typography

I choose Roboto. It is a rounded, clean typeface with a straightforward geometric design that offers clean lines.

Iconography

When it comes to icons and saving time I don’t recommend drawing them out. I recommend an icon library like Material Design icons.

Day 4: Prototype of Admin View

Day 5: Prototype of User View

Day 6: Correction after Customer prospect

After customer prospect, we got some good feedback and some minor corrections too. I modified everything according to it and submitted the project.

Behind the scene :D

Spiderman’s Palace!

Reviews of Customer Prospect 🙎🏻‍♀️

As the goal of the App was to create a contactless environment at the workplace. We wanted to do usability testing with the users.

Task 1: To create a template

Task 2: To assign the template

Task 3: To check user’s progress

It’s live on the Google Play Store 🎉

It is available for the health, medical, hospitality sector and etc.

Conclusion 😇

It was really fun working on this project, I learned

  • Time management.
  • Got the experience of working under tight circumstances.
  • Got the confidence of handling everything on my own.

Do you know you can clap 50 times in just a single press? Let’s give it a try.
It worked, right?

Thank you for making it till here!
